abstract (57) Abstract: Provided is an insertion compound for a positive electrode for a lithium battery, which is capable of obtaining a high voltage. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by the general formula Li x + y M z Mn 2-yz O 4 , has a spinel-like crystal structure, and M represents a transition metal, Insertion compounds with 0 ≦ x <1, 0 ≦ y <0.33, and 0 <z <1. This compound can reversibly insert a considerable amount of lithium at a potential of 4.5 V or higher with respect to Li / Li + . In particular, Ni or Cr can be used as M. The reversible amount of lithium at such a voltage increases as the value of z increases. Such intercalation compounds are suitable cathode materials for high voltage lithium batteries.
