abstract (57) [Summary] [Objective] To provide a method for pressureless sintering of a whisker reinforced alumina composite. A matrix having a density in the range of about 60% to about 70% of theoretical maximum, consisting essentially of alumina and up to about 4% by weight of sintering aid, and about 10 to about 25% by weight. % Of single crystal whiskers having an average aspect ratio in the range of about 3 to less than 10 and about 2 to about 7.5 wt% of a nitride modification consisting essentially of silicon nitride or aluminum nitride or mixtures thereof. A preformed body made from a mixture containing the agent is sintered at ambient pressure to a density of at least about 95% of theoretical density and a density of at least about 98% of theoretical density when densified by hot isostatic pressing. To form a ceramic-sintered composite having a sufficiently high density and concentration of isolated pores. Preferably, the green preform is wrapped with a carbonaceous material during the sintering process to prevent the surface of the preform from being exposed to the atmosphere in the sintering furnace during the sintering process.
