abstract | (57) [Summary]nThe present invention relates to contraceptive vaccines based on cloned zona pellucida genes and methods of alloimmunization with zona pellucida polypeptides. In particular, the invention relates to contraceptive vaccines for female mammals that include a polypeptide that exhibits at least one epitope for binding of an antibody that inhibits fertilization of an oocyte by sperm. This epitope is from the zona pellucida protein of the species using the vaccine. The invention more particularly relates to vaccines in which the zona pellucida proteins are either mouse ZP3 or ZP2 or ZP1 proteins or homologues of these proteins in other mammalian species. Furthermore, the present invention contemplates vaccines containing synthetic peptides that present an epitope for such antibodies that inhibit fertilization. Furthermore, the present invention relates to cloned DNA segments that variously encode mouse ZP3 or ZP2 protein or human ZP3 or ZP2 protein. |
