abstract | (57) [Summary] To encode speech received as a stream of multi-bit input samples, an instantaneous audible threshold characteristic is determined from a finite length input sample sequence. Next, the shaped noise signal is subtracted from the input samples to generate processed samples. The dither signal is subtracted to dynamically ignore the processed sample bits below the threshold. Next, quantization is performed with a variable number of bits below the threshold, and all sample bits above the threshold are maintained. The ignored bits are replaced as buried channel bits by the dither signal by an adjustable number of bits per sample. Therefore, the upgrade output samples have non-ignored bits and buried channel bits. The shaping noise is obtained by shaping filtering the difference between the upgrade sample and the processed sample. This shaping filtering can modify the received white noise-like signal according to the actual threshold-frequency characteristics. |
