titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for lens emulsification
abstract (57) [Summary] A surgical method of removing cataracts from the eye by crushing them, but using a lens shield (30) to minimize the risk of puncturing nearby tissue. The lens shield has two flexible flaps (23), which are guided by a Y-shaped guide (26) and surround the nucleus of the lens (11). A grinding probe (40) is inserted through a central opening (24) in the lens shield base (22) to destroy the cataract nucleus (16). The flap has a length that covers the distal end of the probe before contacting the probe with the subsequent lens capsule (21) to prevent damage to the lens capsule.
