titleOfInvention Pattern recognition method and system for determining misfire conditions in reciprocating engines
abstract (57) Summary A method and corresponding system for determining misfire in a reciprocating engine measures the angular velocity of the engine crankshaft and produces a measured angular velocity signal from the engine crankshaft (403). The filtered (405) produces a filtered acceleration signal that is dependent on the engine crankshaft angular velocity signal and independent of normal combustion information and other higher order effects. Misfire is indicated if the filtered acceleration signal exceeds a threshold that is dependent on at least one of engine speed, engine load, or engine temperature (711). Preferably, prior to the misfire determination, the filtered acceleration signal (701) is sampled over a first period of engine crankshaft rotation to provide a first data point (703) for a second period of engine crankshaft rotation. To provide a second test point (707) and to sample for a third period of engine crankshaft rotation to provide a third data point (705). Next, the average of the first and third data points is subtracted from the second data point to generate a combined acceleration signal (511). If the combined acceleration signal exceeds the threshold (513), misfire is indicated (517). Preferably, the sampling of the filtered acceleration signal is continuous, and the tumbling of the first, second and third data points is separated by two revolutions of the engine crankshaft.
