abstract (57) Abstract: A novel optically active compound and an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a response speed improved thereby are provided. An optically active compound represented by the following general formula (1), an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition containing the same, and a simple matrix liquid crystal display device in which the composition is arranged. Embedded image (In the formula, R 1 is a straight-chain alkyl group having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, R 2 is a straight-chain alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, X 1 and X 2 are H or either F, Y 1 or Y. 2 is H or one of them is F, and A 1 is CH 3 or CF 3 , p = 0 when A 1 is CH 3 , p = 1 when A 1 is CF 3 , and q is an integer of 5 to 8). [Effect] An antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition having an improved response speed from the antiferroelectric state to the ferroelectric state was obtained.
