titleOfInvention Fault detection and fault tolerant digital data processing method and apparatus
abstract (57) A digital data processing device having higher fault (fault) detection and fault tolerant capabilities than ever achieved is provided. A digital data processing device includes a bus for transferring data (eg, data and / or address information) between a plurality of functional units (eg, central processing unit and peripheral controller). Such a first processing unit comprises first and second processing sections which simultaneously supply complementary parts of the same information signal (eg a long word containing data) on the bus. A fault detector reads the result signal from the bus and compares it with at least a portion of the corresponding signal originally generated from the processing section itself. If there is a mismatch, the fault detector signal will signal a fault and, for example, take the unit offline. With the use of redundant units, processing can continue during fault tolerant operation.
