abstract (57) [Summary] (Correction) [Object] To provide an image forming apparatus that positively removes foreign substances from a developing device and reduces the occurrence of image defects of ring marks due to foreign substances mixed in the developing device. An image carrier 1, a developing device 10 that applies an alternating voltage to a developer carrier 11 that is close to the image carrier 1 and carries a developer, and a toner image on the image carrier 1 are recorded on a recording material P. In the image forming apparatus having the transfer device 17 for transferring the toner to the image carrier and the cleaning device 26 for removing the residual toner on the image carrier 1, the foreign material existing in the developing device 10 is removed by the developer carrier 11. It is provided with a special process for selectively discharging the image from the image carrier 1 to the image carrier 1.
