(57) [Summary] [Object] The present invention is to provide a method for obtaining an aromatic polycarbonate having an excellent quality which does not contain impurities, particularly chlorine compounds which cause coloring. [Structure] During the production of aromatic polycarbonate by the melt transesterification method, an aqueous solution of an aromatic hydroxy compound alkali metal salt and phosgene or an aromatic carbonic acid monoester chloride are combined with an aromatic compound in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. Aromatic carbonic acid diesters are obtained by carrying out a multi-stage reaction in a hydrocarbon / water mixed solvent using at least two reactors, and then reacting the aromatic carbonic acid diesters with aromatic dihydroxy compounds.
