abstract (57) [Summary] [Object] To provide an optical amplifier and an optical amplification method with a flat amplification band and at a low cost. [Structure] Active media 11-1 and 11-2 made of an optical fiber in which a rare earth element or a transition metal having a laser transition level is added to a core part or a clad part, and excitation for generating excitation light for exciting the active medium. In the optical amplifier having the light sources 12-1 and 12-2 and the amplification units 110 and 120 having the multiplexing units 13-1 and 13-2 and the optical isolator 14, the rare earth element as the active medium is used. Or at least two rare earth elements in the transition metal doped / optical fiber or transition metal doped / glass host of the optical fiber are different from each other
