abstract (57) [Summary] [Objective] To provide a chroman intermediate, which is an intermediate of a hydrazine derivative having high insecticidal activity. [Structure] 8-t-butyl-5-methylchroman is formylated with N, N-dimethylformamide in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride or with dichloromethyl ether in the presence of Lewis acid to give an aldehyde, which is obtained. Demethylation with a Lewis acid is followed by tert-butylation and finally oxidation with hydrogen peroxide or chlorite to efficiently produce 5-methylchroman-6-carboxylic acid.
