abstract (57) [Abstract] [Purpose] To provide a metal halide lamp, an illumination optical device, and an image display device which have a light emission spectrum in the entire visible region with little color unevenness and can realize a long-lifetime light source with excellent color rendering properties. . [Structure] In a metal halide lamp container 1 in which mercury or a rare gas is sealed, halogen is iodine or bromine or a mixture thereof, GdX 3 , LuX 3 , and CsX are 1 mg / cc or more in total weight, and the weight of CsX is all halogen. One of It is sealed so as to be 5% or more and 50% or less, and the weight ratio of GdX 3 and LuX 3 is 0.1 ≦ GdX 3 / LuX 3 ≦ 10.
