The present invention is directed to a thin inner layer formed by reacting cubic boron nitride (CBN) particles with a reactive glass or ceramic to form a chemical bond and optionally a CBN coated with an outer layer of vitreous material. It provides particles. The CBN particles are useful as abrasive particles in a vitreous bonded matrix.
