abstract (57) [Abstract] [Purpose] To provide a means capable of avoiding stains and deterioration of quality due to excessive paint on a paper splicing portion at the time of frame change, and preventing deformation and wear of a coating blade due to frictional heat. [Structure] A coating material 5 is coated from a slit-shaped coating material discharge port 4 of a coater head 3 on the surface of a base paper 2 which continuously runs through a backing roll 1, and then a coating amount is set by a coating blade 6. -In the coater, the base paper 2 of the old base paper roll being coated and the base end of the new base paper roll are spliced in a running state, and the coating material discharge port is provided for a certain period of time when the spliced part passes the coating position. The coating of the coating material 5 from 4 is stopped, and water is sprayed onto the surface of the base paper 2 from the water ejection port 9 of the coater head 3 while the coating is stopped.
