(57) [Summary] [Structure] A microorganism of the genus Gordona is treated with a nitrile of α-hydroxynitrile having a specific racemic phenyl group or its nitrile in a neutral or basic aqueous medium. A method for producing an optically active α-hydroxycarboxylic acid having a predominant amount of a specific phenyl group directly from these substrates by acting on a mixture of aldehyde and hydrocyanic acid. According to the present invention, α-hydroxycarboxylic acid having a specific phenyl group can be quantitatively produced from a corresponding racemic nitrile with high optical purity. |
