abstract (57) Abstract: The present invention provides a method for site-specifically chlorinating a monocyclic aromatic compound. According to the method of the present invention, first, bromination of a monocyclic aromatic compound is performed, and then site-specific chlorination is performed. These halogenation reactions are carried out in a protic solvent, The protic solvent is then replaced with a polar solvent without isolating the halogenated reaction product. The halogenated reaction product is then catalytically debrominated.
