abstract (57) Abstract: [PROBLEMS] To provide an optically nonlinear active waveguide material containing a dopant having a high hyperpolarizability. An optically nonlinear active waveguiding material comprising an optically transparent polymer and a nonlinear optical dopant having a plurality of donor-π-acceptor units. Particularly suitable dopants are the calix (4) arenes. The present invention also relates to novel calix (4) arenes, which are functionalized with nitrostilbene groups, cyanostilbene groups, sulfonylstilbene groups, sulphonate stilbene groups, azobenzene or benzylideneaniline compounds.
