In the method for producing a dimming material, after the polymerization of the polymerizable substance, the obtained product is heat-treated at a temperature not higher than the phase transition temperature between the isotropic state and the liquid crystal state of the liquid crystal substance and not lower than room temperature. A method for producing a characteristic light control material, and a light control element characterized in that at least one of the substrates is constituted by sandwiching a light control material prepared by the method between a pair of substrates having electrodes on a transparent inner surface.
