titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for forming a mixture having a controlled low concentration target component in a carrier fluid
abstract (57) Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for forming a mixture having a controlled low concentration of target components in a carrier fluid. According to the present invention, a carrier fluid is passed through a layer containing a compound having two phases, at least one of which contains a target component. The vapor phase of the target component is present in the layer in equilibrium with the target component contained in at least one of the two phases. This vapor phase has a partial pressure that depends on the bed temperature. The carrier fluid is passed through the bed so that it contains the target component as it exits the bed, essentially at the vapor phase partial pressure. The concentration of the target component depends on the quotient obtained by dividing the partial pressure of the vapor phase by the total pressure of the carrier fluid. Adjusting the bed temperature and the total pressure of the carrier fluid adjusts the concentration of the target component in the carrier fluid. In addition, the concentration can be adjusted by diluting the mixture passed through the bed with additional carrier fluid. In such a case, the concentration further depends on the quotient obtained by dividing the bed flow rate by the total flow rate.
