abstract (57) [Summary] (Modified) [Objective] To provide a method for producing a lactone of 1R, cis-2,2-dimethyl-3-formylcyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid. The compound of formula (II) having 1R, cis-configuration is treated with at least 2 equivalents of halogen (excluding fluorine) to obtain a mixture of compounds of formula (III 1 ) and the like. The compound of formula (IV) or the ring-opened compound of formula (I) is treated with a basic reagent such as alkali hydroxide or alkali carbonate. A method of producing a compound of formula (I) by treating with a compound of V ') and then reacting with an oxidizing agent. [The mixture of such formula (III 1), formula (III 1) and formula (II XH of I 1) 2 C-CC = 0) is X 2 HC-C (= 0 ) (III 2 ), X 3 C—C (= 0) (III 3 ), and also a compound of formula (IV).
