(57) Summary: A method for removing aldehydes or vinyl esters from a gas or liquid process stream, comprising: A) contacting the gas or liquid process stream intimately with an aqueous caustic sulfite solution; ) Separating the aqueous caustic sulphite solution from the process stream; provided that the aqueous caustic sulphite solution contains sufficient base such that the pH of the aqueous caustic sulphite solution is 12 or more after separation from the process stream, and The aqueous caustic sulfite solution prior to contacting with the process stream comprises at least 0.2 mole of sulfite ion for each mole of aldehyde or vinyl acetate to be removed from the process stream.
