(57) [Summary] (Modified) [Objective] To provide a method and apparatus for controlling solidification during alloy casting. A molten metal material is introduced into an ingot mold 28, and the temperature and temperature distribution on the surface of the molten pool 22 located in the mold are measured by an imaging radiometer 48. The imaging radiometer is arranged outside the vacuum chamber 30 surrounding the mold to observe the molten pool surface through a viewing window 46. The surface of the molten pool is irradiated with a stream of electrons using at least one electron beam gun 42. The electron flow intensity and irradiation position are selectively adjusted to maintain a predetermined temperature and temperature distribution on the surface of the molten pool, thereby obtaining a desired metallographic structure in the solidified ingot. The image signal output as an output from the imaging radiometer is transmitted to image analyzer 64 and image monitor 66 to form an image representing the temperature and temperature distribution of the melt pool surface. |
