The optically active compound of the present invention and the chiral smectic liquid crystal composition using the same have extremely large spontaneous polarization and have a response speed equal to that of the conventional TN type display. It is as large as 00 times, and by using it, it is possible to obtain a high-quality operation display, a high-speed response optical switch and an optical shutter.
