PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the title high-purity compound by alkoxylating o-chloronitrobenzene in the presence of an O 2 -containing gas and dimethyl sulfoxide, adjusting pH of the reaction solution to a specific range and separating and purifying the reaction product. n CONSTITUTION: Under the introductions of an O 2 -containing gas to reaction system, o- or p-chloronitrobenzene is alkoxylated an alcohol, preferably 1-10C aliphatic alcohol such as ethanol in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide such as NaOH and dimethyl sulfoxide at 40-70°C at normal pressure. The reaction solution is adjusted to pH 9-12 by adding an acid such as hydrochloric acid. Then the formed o- or p-alkoxynitrobenzene is separated and purified to give the objective high-purity compound useful as a raw material for dye while suppressing the formation of azoxy compound, etc., as by-products, reducing an amount of drain age in treating process after the reaction.
