| abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a color-developing dye in a color-developing recording without producing tarry by-product at a low-cost by reacting a benzoic acid derivative with a phenol derivative in concentrated sulfuric acid in the presence of phosphoric acid. n CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a benzoic acid derivative of formula I (X is lower alkyl or halogen; m is 1 or 2) with a phenol derivative of formula II [R is H or lower alkyl; Ar is (substituted) phenylene or naphthylene; R 1 and R 2 are H or lower alkyl; Y is H or substituted amino group of formula N(R 3 )R 4 ; R 3 is H or lower alkyl; R 4 is lower alkyl, phenyl or naphthyl] in concentrated sulfuric acid in the presence of phosphoric acid at 0-50°C.
