titleOfInvention Electroviscous fluid composition
abstract PURPOSE:To decrease the current density and to improve the long-term stabilities of shearing stress and current density when a large shearing stress appears upon inputting a relatively small electrical field by dispersing a specified sulfonated polymer in an insulating dispersing medium. CONSTITUTION:A sulfonated aromatic polymer having a mean particle size of 0.1-100mum and a water content of 10pts.wt. or less is prepd. by suspension- polymerizing 50.0-99.9mol% vinyl-aromatic compd. (e.g. styrene), 50,0-0.1mol% polyvinyl compd. (e.g. divinylbenzene) and optionally at most 50mol% other vinyl compd. (e.g. ethylene) at 50-100 deg.C for 2-30hr, sulfonating 100pts.wt. resulting crosslinked copolymer with 150pts.wt. or above fuming sulfuric acid at -20 to +250 deg.C and washing and drying the product. Then, 100pts.wt. particulate polymer thus obtained is dispersed in 50-500pts.wt. insulating dispersing medium (e.g. polydimethylsiloxane).
