PURPOSE: To obtain three-branched or four-branched star-shaped compounds having a narrow molecular weight distribution and useful, e.g. as a prepolymer for an elastomer and a crosslinking agent by polymerizing a specified olefin compound in the presence of a special initiator and subsequently terminating the reaction using a terminator. n CONSTITUTION: An olefin compound (e.g. o-methoxystyrene) of formula II (A is single bond, R 3 is H or methyl, R 4 is univalent organic group; Or, A is phenylene, R 3 is H, R 4 is alkyl) is initially polymerized in the presence of, as an initiator, an adduct between a polyfunctional alkenyl ether (e.g. 1,2,3- trivinyloxyethoxybenzene) of formula I (R 1 is H or methyl (n) is 3 or 4; R 2 is trivalent organic group in case of n=3 or tetravalent organic group in case of n=4) and a cation-supplying compound (e.g. CH 3 COOH). This reaction is then terminated by using a terminator (preferably ethanol, dimethylamine, etc.), thus obtaining the objective compound of formula III ((x) is 1-10000; Z is terminator residue). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio |
