abstract |
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a germicide or fiber treating agent in a short time and good yield while suppressing by-products and remaining formaldehyde by subjecting a hydantoin compound to methylolation with formaldehyde under specific conditions. n CONSTITUTION: 1mol hydantoin is subjected to methylolation with 1.95-2.30mol formaldehyde in a solvent such as water or alcohols at 70-90°C while controlling pH of the reaction system to 6.8-9.0 by an alkali (e.g. NaOH) to provide the title compound. The hydantoin includes e.g. 5,5-dimethylhydantoin and the objective dimethylol hydantoin include e.g. dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin.
