abstract PURPOSE: To obtain an antimicrobial composition containing a copolymer having a specific units as an active ingredient, excellent in antimicrobial force activity with safety and capable of retaining the effect over a long period. n CONSTITUTION: The objective composition containing a polymer containing a constituting unit derived from non-crosslinkable vinyl monomer, e.g. (meth) acrylic acid ester-based, vinyl ester-based and nitrile-based monomer and a constituting unit expressed by formula I [R 1 is H or methyl; A is phenylene which may contain a substituent group; R 2 is 1-2C alkylene; B is a group containing a quaternary ammonium salt or a betaine type compound, e.g. a unit expressed by formula II to formula V (X and Y are anion, each monovalent, thus divalent by bath: R 3 is 6-18C alky; R 4 is 2-10C alkylene; R 5 to R 8 are 1-3C alkyl; R 9 is 1-3C alkylene)@{9147-28} as an active ingredient.
