abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a humectant useful for a cosmetic having excellent moisture retaining action and good feeling in use, comprising a lamella structure material prepared by using a fatty acid monoglyceride having excellent keratin layer water maintaining ability as an active ingredient. n CONSTITUTION: A humectant moisture retaining action and good feeling in use, comprising a lamella structure material, as an active ingredient, composed of a fatty acid monoglyceride prepared by stirring a solution containing a fatty acid monoglyceride (especially preferably monoglyceride of 8-18C saturated or unsaturated fatty acid) in the presence of a calcium ion or lanthanum ion as a main constituent component. A cosmetic having excellent moisture retaining effects is obtained by addition of the humectant. The cosmetic is preferably used as skin cosmetic such as toilet lotion and toilet essence.
