titleOfInvention Optically active compound and display element
abstract PURPOSE: To provide a new optically active compound exhibiting a tri-stable chiral smectic CA phase and useful as an antiferro-electric liquid crystal material. n CONSTITUTION: The optically active compound of formula 1 (R 1 is 4-16C alkyl; R 2 is 4-12C alkyl; * represents optically active atom), e.g. (R)-4'- decylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid 4-(1-trifluoro-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-2- fluorophenyl ester. The compound can easily be produced by reacting a compound of formula 6 with a compound of formula 5 (derived from a compound of formula 2 in two steps via a compound of formula 3) in the presence of a dehydrative condensation agent such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide using an organic base such as N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine as a catalyst in a solvent such as methylene chloride. A liquid crystal display element having large area and stable molecular orientation can be produced by using the above compound as the liquid crystal material. A half-tone display can be performed by the element taking advantage of the tri-stable state. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
