abstract | PURPOSE: To estimate an adding clad quantity accurately in the case of manufacturing an optical fiber base material, by manufacturing a starting base material consisting of a part of clads and a core, measuring its specific refractive index difference, forming a finished base material by adding the clads (pure quartz) by a quantity estimated from its value, and obtaining the specific refractive index difference (absolute specific refractive index difference) of the finished base material in the case of measuring the refractive index of the starting base material. n CONSTITUTION: In the case of measuring refractive index distribution of a starting base material 10, temperature of matching oil 20 is measured, and refractive index N 0 of the matching oil 20 and refractive index N 3 of quartz at its temperature are found by means of calculation. Furthermore, refractive index N 03 of the quartz with the matching oil using as its standard is found from these N 0 and N 3 by means of calculation.
