titleOfInvention Method for refining carboxylic acid
abstract PURPOSE: To remove iodide and oxidative impurities from carboxylic acids, more particularly acetic acid produced by carbonylation. n CONSTITUTION: At the time of refining up to 6C impure carboxylic acids, more preferably acetic acid, contg. the iodides and oxidative impurities produced by the adequate carbonylation of the reactant in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst and iodide accelerator, a) the carboxylic acid is brought into contact with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a strong acid, more particularly sulfuric acid and thereafter, b) the refined carboxylic acid is recovered by distillation or evaporation from this product. The iodide impurities are decreased down to about 55 to ≤50 ppb according to this method. The oxidative impurities may be decreased to the extent that the carboxylic acid is accepted in a permanganate test. The stage (b) is preferably executed in the presence of a metal salt (more particularly potassium acetate) for reducing sulfur contamination and/or a metal salt (more preferably calcium acetate) for reducing peroxide. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO
