abstract PURPOSE: To produce an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound by alkylating a naphthalene or an alkylnaphthalene with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst under a mild reaction condition while suppressing formation of high-boiling by-products. n CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compound is alkylated with an alkylating agent in the presence of a metallic salt of silicotungstic acid shown by the formula M x H 4-x SiW 12 O 40 (M is metal of group Ia of the periodic table; x is number of 0.5-2.8). Especially naphthalene or an alkylnaphthalene is alkylated by using an olefin as the alkylating agent to give the objective alkyl-substituted naphthalene in high conversion ratio and in high selectivity. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
