titleOfInvention Optically active pyrazine compound and display element
abstract PURPOSE: To provide the subject compound capable of giving large area, stable molecular orientation and useful as an excellent antiferroelectric liquid crystal material having excellent high speed response. n CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula (R 1 is 4-16C alkyl or alkoxy; R 2 is 4-12C alkyl; * is optically active), e.g. (R)-5-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)-2-pyrazine carboxylic acid 4-(1-methylpentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl ester. The compound is produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine), removing the benzyl group from the product in the presence of palladium/charcoal catalyst in a solvent such as ethanol and subsequently reacting the reaction product with a pyrazine carboxylic acid compound. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
