abstract PURPOSE: To provide the subject thiophene derivatives having a conjugated long chain at 3-position, capable of generating only one isomer by photo- irradiation, remarkably large in difference between the absorption bands of its isomers and between the emission bands thereof, useful as a photo-responsive material and capable of reversible conversion between isomers. n CONSTITUTION: Compounds of the formula (R is aldehyde, carboxyl, alkyl ester or alkyl acetal; n is 3-5), e.g. 11-(3-thienyl)undeca-2,4,6,8,10-pentenecarboxylic acid. The above-mentioned compounds can be obtained by reacting a thiophene derivative having a conjugated long chain the terminal group of which is an aldehyde group at 3-position with a triphenylphosphorane or a triphenylphosphonium salt having an alkyl acetal group and subsequently hydrolyzing it.
