titleOfInvention Optically active compound and display element
abstract PURPOSE: To provide a new liquid crystal compound having decreased phase- transition temperature and useful as an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material having three stable states and capable of getting a stable molecular orientation at a large area which is difficult to be achieved by conventional ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal. n CONSTITUTION: The objective optically active compound is expressed by formula I (R 1 is 4-16C alkyl; R 2 is 4-12C alkyl; * represents optically active atom), e.g. (R)-4'-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid 4-(1- trifluoromethylheptyloxycarbonyl)-3-methylphenyl ester. The compound can easily be produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a dehydrating condensation agent such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and a catalyst such as N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine in a solvent such as methylene chloride and chloroform. Since the compound exhibits chiral smectic CA phase over a broad temperature range near room temperature, it is useful as the above antiferroelectric liquid crystal material and a display element. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
