titleOfInvention Production of 2-chloro-4-pyridinemethanol
abstract PURPOSE: To achieve high yield by hydrogenating 2-chloro-4cyanopyridine in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst under specific conditions, nearly selectively providing the subject compound and converting by-products into the subject compound. n CONSTITUTION: 2-Chloro-4-cyanopyridine is hydrogenated in an acidic aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc., diluted with water in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst such as Raney nickel catalyst at ≤40°C to provide 2-chloro-4-pyridinemethanol. Furthermore, 2-chloro-4-aminomethylpyridine formed as a by-product in the reaction system is then treated with a nitrite such as sodium nitrite in an acidic aqueous solution and converted into the 2-chloro-4-pyridinemethanol. The resultant compound is useful as a raw material for producing various medicines and agricultural chemicals. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
