abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a thermoplastic molding material which is based on a specific modified polyphenylene ether, has improved mechanical properties, and is suitable for the use in automotive, electrical, and precision industries. n CONSTITUTION: This material is prepd. by compounding 100 pts.wt. polyphenylene ether formed by oxidatively bonding 99.8-95 mol.% phenol compd. of formula I (wherein R 1 and R 2 are each a 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, etc.; R 3 and R 4 are each a 1-6C alkyl or H; and X is Cl, Br, etc.), (e.g. 2-methyl-6-ethylphenol) to 0.2-5 mol.% phenol compd. of formula II (wherein R 5 and R 6 are each a 1-6C alkyl; R 7 and R 8 are each the same as R 3 and R 4 ; Y is an arbitrary group other than halogen; and (n) is 1 or 2) (e.g. 2,4,6-trimethylphenol) with 0.5-70 pts.wt. monomer or polymer having single or plural double bonds (e.g. maleic anhydride or polybutadiene), reacting the resultant compsn. at 150-350°C, and, if necessary, further compounding 250 pts.wt. polycondensate (e.g. a polyamide) into the reaction product. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO
