abstract PURPOSE: To obtain purified p-cumylphenol useful as a chain terminator for polycarbonate by distilling, in the presence of a base, crude p-cumylphenol resulting from reacting α-methylstyrene with phenol. n CONSTITUTION: A α-Methylstyrene of formula I is slowly added to 50-200% molar excess of phenol of formula II in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g. acid ion exchange resin) at 80-110°C to yield crude p-cumylphenol. Then, after the removal of the catalyst, the crude reaction product is distilled in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium bicarbonate) at a reduced pressure of 25-200 mm to obtain pure p-cumylphenol. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO
