titleOfInvention Ether based nematic liquid crystal compound
abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R is 1-5C straight-chain alkyl; n is 1-7; X is H or F; Y is CH 2 CH 2 or CH=CH; configurations of two cyclohexane rings are each transequatorial-equatorial) configuration]. n EXAMPLE: A compound expressed by formula VII. n USE: An ether based nematic liquid crystal compound useful as an electrooptical display material. n PREPARATION: For example, a compound expressed by formula II is reacted with triphenylphosphine in toluene to afford a compound expressed by formula III. Then the compound expressed by formula III is treated with a strong base to give Witting reagent, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula IV to give a compound expressed by formula V. Then compound expressed by formula V is subjected to catalytic reduction in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst to afford a compound expressed by formula VI. Finally, the compound expressed by formula VI is reacted with cuporous cyanide in N,N-dimethylformamide to provide the compound expressed by formula I wherein Y is CH=CH. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
