titleOfInvention Method for purifying silicon tetrachloride
abstract PURPOSE: To easily obtain high purity silicon tetrachloride not practically contg. methylchlorosilanes by irradiating silicon tetrachloride contg. methylchlorosilanes with light in the presence of chlorine, and converting the methylchlorosilanes into compds. having higher b.p. n CONSTITUTION: Purified chlorine is introduced and dissolved in silicon tetrachloride contg. methylchlorosilanes and the silicon tetrachloride is irradiated with light or the chlorine is introduced under irradiation with light. The methyl groups of the methylchlorosilanes are chlorinated and the chloromethylated chlorosilanes having higher b.p. are produced. A high pressure mercury lamp is preferably used as a light source and irradiation with light is carried out for a sufficiently long time because the reaction rate is low. The chloromethylated chlorosilanes are then removed from the silicon tetrachloride by distillation and silicon tetrachloride contg. ≤1ppm residual methylchlorosilanes is obtd. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
