titleOfInvention Lactone compound and composition
abstract NEW MATERIAL:Compounds expressed by formula I (R 1 is 1-5C alkyl or alkoxy; R 2 is 1-16C alkyl; A is single bond, 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; * denotes asymmetric carbon atom). n EXAMPLE: rel-(αS,γS)-α-Hexyl-γ-(4-heptyloxyphenyl)-γ-butyrolactone. n USE: A liquid crystal display element and a liquid crystal optical switching element capable of remarkably increasing spontaneous polarization values by adding thereof to a basic substance for nonchiral ferroelectric liquid crystal compositions. n PREPARATION: An optically active epoxide expressed by formula II is made to react with a compound expressed by formula III, which is converted into anions by reacting lithium diisopropylamide. The resultant compound is then treated with an acid to afford a lactone expressed by formula IV which is a cyclized diastereomer. Separation and purification are subsequently carried out to provide the objective trans- and cis-compounds expressed by formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
