titleOfInvention Method for optically resolving (+-)-1-methyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethylamine
abstract PURPOSE: To readily obtain the subject optically active compound of high optical purity in high yield by optically resolving a racemic 1-methyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl) ethylamine using readily available optically active mandelic acid as a resolving agent. n CONSTITUTION: A racemic 1-methyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethylamine [hereinafter abbreviated to (±)-MCEA] expressed by formula I is reacted with optically active mandelic acid expressed by formula II as a resolving agent in an amount of 1.0-1.5 equiv. based on the aforementioned compound in a solvent, dissolved by heating and then cooled to provide a supersaturated solution and form crystals of sparingly soluble diastereomer salts. The formed crystals are then normally treated with a water-soluble base such as a solution of NaOH at 0-30°C and optically resolved to afford the objective optically active MCEA of high optical purity useful as a resolving agent for carboxylic acids, etc., or asymmetric sources for various asymmetric syntheses in high yield. Furthermore, the optically active mandelic acid present as an alkali salt in the aqueous solution is recovered and reutilized by treatment with a mineral acid. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
