titleOfInvention Optical fiber type liquid detector
abstract PURPOSE: To make the structure of a detector simple and inexpensive and to enable quick and reliable detection of permeation of a liquid by a construction wherein at least a melt-stretched part of an optical fiber melt coupler is held in a protective container having a liquid inflow port. n CONSTITUTION: At least a melt-stretched part 2 of an optical fiber melt coupler 1 is held in a protective container 3 having a liquid inflow port 4 through which a liquid flows in from outside. When no liquid permeates into a closure D, the periphery of the stretched part 2 is covered with air of a refractive index n 3 = 1, and therefore a light propagated through the stretched part 2 is propagated in the same way as in a conventional optical fiber melt coupler 1. When the liquid permeates into the closure D, water flows in from the liquid inflow port 4 formed in the protective container 3 of the coupler 1 and it comes into contact with the stretched part 2 and immerses it. Since the refractive index of the water is n 3 = 1.3, on the occasion, the way of propagation of the light through the stretched part 2 changes and a transmission loss of the light increases. Since the increase of the transmission loss occurs immediately when the stretched part 2 is brought into contact with the water, the permeation of the water can be discriminated quickly and accurately. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
