titleOfInvention Magnetic fluid
abstract PURPOSE: To easily obtain high saturation magnetization and chemical stability by forming an iron carbide or iron nitride layer on the surface of oxide ferromagnetic fine particles, applying a surfactant thereon, and dispersing the particles in a dispersion medium. n CONSTITUTION: Oxide ferromagnetic fine particles such as magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) of 3-15nm average particle diameter are heat-treated at 300-400°C for about one hour in CO 2 gas or N 2 gas to form a mixture layer of FeC and FeC 2 or a mixture layer of FeN and FeN 2 on the particles to obtain the mixture layer- coated material (A). Then, (A) component is immersed in a dilution of surfactant (B) such as sodium oleate at elevated temp. to deposit (B) component on (A) component and to obtain coated fine particles (C). Then, (C) component is dispersed and mixed in kerosine or the like to obtain the magnetic fluid. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
