abstract PURPOSE: To prepare the 2,6-isomer from dimethylnaphthalenes by subjecting naphthalene and the dimethylnaphthalenes to a transmethylation reaction and simultaneously subjecting the dimethylnaphthalenes to an isomerization reaction to prepare the dimethylnaphthalenes rich in the 2,6-isomer and further methylat ing the separated monomethyl isomer. n CONSTITUTION: The transmethylation between naphthalene and dimethylnaphthalenes (DMNs) and the isomerization of the DMNs are performed in the presence of trimethylnaphthalenes(TMNs) and further monomethylnaphthalenes(MMNs) to the DMNs rich in the 2,6-isomer, followed by separating the unreacted naph thalene, MMNs, DMNs and TMNs from the reaction product. The 2,6-isomer is separated from the gathered DMNs. The TMNs are circulation-used. The above-mentioned method permits to reduce the loss of CH 3 groups caused by the isomerization of only DMNs. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
