titleOfInvention Separation and recovery of omega-hydroxy fatty acid
abstract PURPOSE: To separate an ω-hydroxy fatty acid by taking advantage of the difference in solubility of formed salt in water by treating a mixture of an ω-hydroxy fatty acid or an ester thereof, an α, ω-diol and a long-chain dibasic acid or an ester thereof in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. n CONSTITUTION: A mixture comprising three substances of an ω-hydroxy fatty acid shown by formula I (R 1 is H or alkyl; n is 8-16) or an ester thereof, an α, ω-diol shown by formula II and a long-chain dibasic acid shown by formula III (R 2 is H or alkyl) or an ester thereof is treated in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to give an alkali metal salt, a dialkali metallic salt of long-chain dibasic acid is extracted in a water phase, the other substances are precipitated as solid, subjected to solid-liquid separation and each substance is treated with a mineral acid and separated. Optionally, at a stage before the treatment with a mineral acid, the α, ω-diol is extracted with an organic solvent to separate and recover the three compounds shown by formula I to formula III, respectively. An ω-hydroxy fatty acid is useful as a raw material for macrocyclic lactones. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO&Japio
