titleOfInvention Electroviscous fluid composition
abstract PURPOSE:To prepare an electroviscous fluid compsn, which generates a high shearing force when a relatively weak electric field is applied, gives a low electric current density under such a condition and is improved in the long-term stabilities of shearing stress and current density. CONSTITUTION:A crosslinked polymer is prepd. by suspension- or emulsion- polymerizing 50.0-99.0mol% vinyl-arom. compd. (e.g. styrene), 0.1-50.0mol% polyvinyl compd. (e.g. divinylbenzene) and 50mol% or less other vinyl compd. (e.g. ethylene) at 50-100 deg.C for 2-40hr. Then, 100 pts.wt. the crosslinked polymer is sulfonated with a sulfonating agent at -20 to 250 deg.C for 0.3-100hr. in 1.000 pts.wt. or less swelling solvent and dried to prepare a sulfonated polymer. Then 100 pts.wt. thereof is sulfonated with 100 pts.wt. or more sulfonating agent at -20 to 250 deg.C for 0.3-100hr to obtain dispersed phase particles composed of a sulfonated polymer having sulfo-substd. arom. rings of which mean particle size is 0.1-100mum. Then, 100 pts.wt. dispersed phase particles are dispersed in 50-100 pts.wt. insulating dispersion medium (e.g. polydimethylsiloxane).
